Installing IFace inside the TS-2000 – 23 cm band

In a previous article we presented how to install the IFace card inside the Kenwood TS-2000 in order to obtain the IF signal of all bands so that it can be sent to an external SDR. Now let’s see how to get the IF signal for the 23 cm band. Installation is very easy.

The TS-2000, like other radios, has a fairly complex configuration and uses different intermediate frequencies depending on the band on which you are operating. In any case, the one described here is the sequence of operations to be performed to obtain a bandwidth sufficient to provide a panoramic receiver around the IF frequency relative to the 23 cm band (1.2 GHz).

The point where to take the IF signal can be identified more precisely through the wiring diagram as shown in the following images. The electronic board of interest is the one called TX-RX3 and the signal can be taken from the CN8 connector.

The point where to take the IF signal on the TX-RX3 UNIT is indicated in the following image.

For the sake of completeness, a detail of the point where to take the power supply for the IFace card is also indicated.

PTT: This is not required for the TS-2000 as the reception circuit is muted during transmission.

You can purchase IFace 2 using one of the buttons below.

ATTENTION: Though installing the IFace is not difficult, you do this at your own risk. TSP S.r.l. is not responsible for any damage, unwanted side-effects or whatever.

SDR interface for the IC-706MKIIG

These are the instructions to install the IFace interface inside of the Icom IC-706MKIIG. The installation is very easy.

The IC-706MKIIG, like other radios, has a fairly complex configuration and uses two different intermediate frequencies. We are interested in the first, the “wideband” one, the one before the main bandpass filter (the roofing filter so to speak). The sequence of operations to be performed in order to obtain a sufficient bandwidth to realize a panoramic receiver around the chosen IF frequency is shown below. The intermediate frequency filter is also used in transmission, so it will be preferable to use the PTT command to disable the IFace during transmission. The following images show the point where the IF signal will be taken.

Let’s start by analyzing the wiring diagram. We have to find the first mixer, the PTT and where to take the power supply. From the following images everything will appear clear.

PTT and power supply can be easily taken from the connector J10. The interesting signal are labeled as T8 and 13.8 respectively.

At this point we have to locate the points where we connect the electric cables to the IFace. The following images show where to take the various signals.

If you like the idea and the goodness of the proposal buy an IFace using the button below.

HDSDR settings for SDR panadapter and CAT control

Our IFace interface is used to add an SDR panadapter to any radio, present or future. The image below shows the typical application context where the IF signal of our receiver is sent to an external SDR receiver (in the specific case one from SDRplay).

The configuration we are going to examine is, therefore, the following.

We sample the signal after the first IF mixer but before the bandpass filter, the so-called “roofing filter”, and we send it to our IFace. This is nothing more than a broadband buffer that allows you to replicate the signal without overloading the mixer circuits. At the output of the card, the signal can be sent to an external receiver, typically an SDR, through a common 50 Ohm line.

At this point, there is nothing left to do but install the drivers for our A / D converter for RF signals and the demodulation software. In the specific case, we will use an RSP1 from SDRplay and the HDSDR program. In addition, through the CAT port, we can control our radio so as to have a perfect match of what we see on the screen with what we are receiving from the radio. The CAT interface is managed through the OmniRig software.

The main advantage is that of having a second receiver much more powerful than the internal one of the radio.

The following images show how the HDSDR program should be configured.

The result is also shown in a video where you can appreciate the reception quality and ease of radio control.

Installing IFace inside the TS-2000 – VHF and UHF bands

In a previous article we presented how to install the IFace card inside the Kenwood TS-2000 to obtain the IF signal of the HF and 50 MHz bands in order to send it to an external SDR. Now let’s see how to get the IF signal for the VHF and UHF bands. Installation is very easy.

The result you can obtain is well shown in the following video.

The TS-2000, like other radios, has a fairly complex configuration and uses different intermediate frequencies depending on the band on which you are operating. In any case, the one described here is the sequence of operations to be performed to obtain a bandwidth sufficient to provide a panoramic receiver around the IF frequency relative to the VHF and UHF bands.

The point where the IF signal is taken can be identified more precisely using the electrical scheme as shown in the following images. The electronic card of interest is the one named TX-RX2 and the signal can be taken R167 or C233.

Now we need to find out where to get the power supply: energy can be taken from the CN 12 connector or from the CN 17, 14S signal.

  • PTT: for the TS-2000 it is not required because the reception circuit is automatically muted during transmission.

In the images that follow you can see the points where to take the IF signal: therefore the installation is really simple. Pay attention, for this RTX the IF sampling point is on the bottom layer of the TX-RX 2 UNIT.

You can by IFace 2 simply making click on the buttons below.

These are the instructions to install the IFace interface inside of the YAESU FT-1000MP Mark-V Field. The installation is very easy.

The FT-1000MP Mark-V Field, like other radios, has a very complex configuration and uses different intermediate frequencies. We are interested in having a “wide band” signal, so it will have to be picked up before the main band pass filter. The sequence of operations to be performed to obtain a sufficient bandwidth to realize a panoramic receiver around the chosen IF frequency (70.455 MHz) is shown below. The path of the TX and RX signals is partly separate, so the PTT command to disable the IFace during transmission will not be necessary. The following images show the point where the IF signal will be taken.

Now we need to locate the points where to connect the electric cables to the IFace. The following images illustrate where to get the various signals on the RF UNIT.

SDR interface for the TS-590S

These are the instructions to install the IFace interface inside of the Kenwood TS-590S. The installation is very easy. For the TS-590SG see the note below.

IFace 2

The TS-590S, like other radios, has a complex configuration and uses different intermediate frequencies also depending on the band used. This radio requires 2 IFace cards because two intermediate frequencies are used, one at 11.374 MHz and another at 73.095 MHz. We are interested in having a “wide band” signal, so it will have to be taken before the main band pass filter.
The sequence of operations to be performed to obtain a sufficient bandwidth to realize a panoramic receiver around the chosen IF frequency is shown below. The path of the TX and RX signals is partly separate, so the PTT command to disable the IFace during transmission will not be necessary. The following images show the point where the IF signal will be taken.

As you can see below, the radio uses two different frequencies depending on the band chosen: it is therefore advisable to use two IFace interfaces and not to insert a mechanical switch.

Let’s start by analyzing the wiring diagram. We have to find the first mixer and where to take the power supply. From the following image everything will appear clear.

At this point we have to locate the points where we connect the electric cables to the IFace. The following images show where to take the various signals.

Last but not least, don’t forget to provide power supply to the IFace: you can easily find a source inside your radio.
